"Babe Ruth wasn't the only sports figure who inspired confectioners' creativity during the 1920s. Football's Red Grange took center stage in the 1926 feature One Minute to Play and photographs from the gridiron immortal's film appearance acted as the basis for a new candy product as well as a very rare set of football cards. The Red Grange cards (thin-paper, blank-backed items measuring 2" x 3" and showcasing black-and-white images) were produced by the Shotwell Mfg. Co. of Chicago and Brooklyn. They're so rare that the full checklist wasn't known until quite recently, and the cards are regarded today as among the scarcest football collectibles in the hobby. Even more "impossible" than those inserts, however, is the packaging that once conveyed them to the public: one of the issue's incredible pictorial wrappers is shown here offered. The thin, translucent-paper piece, with a blazing red illustration of Grange in action dominating its central design, measures 7-7/8" x 5-7/8". In addition to the fabulous, uniformed likeness, the 5c wrapper's completely intact graphics include a facsimile autograph with inscription, plenty of slogans touting Red Grange Candy's wholesomeness, and even a line-drawing of the company's "Large, Clean, Sunlight Factory." Reflecting extraordinary preservation for such a fragile item, with natural folds and wear-points only lightly evident, the wrapper presents minimally at the EX level of condition. An almost never-seen vintage relic, and a phenomenal Red Grange specialty piece!"
